‘Girtin’ Antique Cream Laid 140lb / 300 gsm (Not)
Quarter Imperial (11”x 15”)
Handmade rag watercolour paper ~ Tub-sized with gelatine.
This paper is made from cotton and linen rag, with other fibre inclusions, to recreate the tones and surfaces familiar to artists in the late 18th Century. These papers are flecked with fragments of unbleached hemp fibre and blue / grey linen rag.
The laid watermark is more prominent on one side and both sides of the sheet can be painted on with equal effect. There maybe some colour variation between batches, although we do try to keep this to a minimum.
Please be aware that we make limited numbers of the Heritage papers. If you would like us to add your name to the waiting list to be alerted when stock becomes available please email us at tworiverspaper@gmail.com

Questions about our Paper?
All our products are handmade by skilled craftspeople using traditional methods. Each sheet is created from a blend of cotton and linen that has been broken down into individual fibres using the mill’s Hollander beaters.
The gentle air-drying process and gelatine sizing enhance the paper’s strength. Our sizing method allows artists to easily manipulate paint on the surface, or even to remove it. The paint does not absorb into the paper, allowing the pigment to dry to a sharp, brilliant finish. The entire making process, from start to finish, takes 3 to 4 working days.

This cream colored laid paper is gorgeous, strong and the paint flows on beautifully and stays sharp. It also takes reworking like a dream. Good machine made papers like Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano or Laington Prestige can be reworked with certain techniques, but they are limited and if pushed too far, the results can be sad. TR Girtin sheets are able to withstand more lifting and scrubbing, and when color is reapplied it lays on clean and bright. It’s uncanny. When I die I want to become an Undine and haunt the waters of Exmoor and the Pitt Mill to make sure their method of papermaking shall not perish from this earth.

Very good paper, keep making this range, we need much more of it. Tough and ideal for reworking, great texture for any tricky watercolour. Paper is the secret to a good result. Machine paper is hopeless. Can you sell it in single sheets too please.

a very good alternative to the Turner/Cox range of paper when out of stock. As ever the top notch paper making result means that watercolour works can be washed out and worked over again. The texture makes all the right marks and without this any modern machine made paper is hopeless for making good beautiful work than can compete with any historic master works.
